Rural Wanganui consists of three broad areas.

To the north is Westmere, Kai Iwi and Maxwell, which features many lifestyle blocks and farms. Some of New Zealand's most productive land has meant that this area is very popular.

To the East is the Parapara and River Road areas. Driving from Wanganui you are quickly into steep hilly and scenic countryside.

To the South you have the Fordell/Whangaehu areas with Ratana 15 minutes away.
